Ubuntu 8.10 is about 11 days away from being launched. So far, I've taken my new Dell 1525 (vista sp1 pre-installed) on a live-cd session and it was beautiful to see that everything worked out of the box. I was able to turn on the beautiful desktop effects, log into my WEP encrypted wifi, use the laptop's built in web cam, and a host of other things. It feels damn good to finally be able to pop in a linux CD and have everything work. Alhumdulilah (praise be to Allah swt).
Now I'm just waiting for a guide to dual boot vista sp1 and ubuntu 8.10 without messing up my Vista partition :D

Hi. I have dell inspiron 1525 too. Purple with flowers. Also, I never downloaded Ubuntu the last time due to unfortunate events and my moving to a small isolated island.
Well I am finding some free time now. Should I just wait until the new version comes out and will I be able to retrieve my documents from my crashed laptop?
That laptop is BEAUTIFUL isn't it? Mines is black matte (kinda like me huh?).
anyway, regarding your question. I would say if you have documents to retrieve you can get the BETA CD now.
If you use bittorrent, you can grab the torrent from here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.10/ubuntu-8.10-beta-desktop-i386.iso.torrent
If you want to just download the ISO the regular way, the link is here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.10/ubuntu-8.10-beta-desktop-i386.iso
And ofcourse, the original location for both of the above are here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.10/
I personally got it installed last night. and found everything to be working, from web cam to volume buttons, to wifi, etc. Dell really worked hard with Ubuntu to make sure everything works out of the box.
But to answer your question, yes you can use the BETA to retrieve your documents from a crashed laptop. Just pop the CD into the crashed laptop, make sure you boot into ubuntu (if it doesn't load up ubuntu automatically, then check the boot sequence in bios and make sure CD loads before HD). Once your in ubuntu, use a flash drive to copy over files from windows drive, or e-mail them to yourself.
Hope everything works out for you, and enjoy nevis.
Stay away from the parties.
Hey thanks for the info. I will attempt to download the stuff soon but I won't be able to try it on the laptop yet because it is back home.
Yes the dell is amazing soooo pretty (purple with flowers) just like me.
And yes, the black matte is just like you as well.
Neways, thanks again, and I will ask more questions if they shall arise when i get a chance to restore my previous laptop.
Nevis is an absolute paradise with pretty much nothing to do. It's not as bad as some people tried to make it sound in the forums, you just have to be openminded and not accept life to be exactly like it is back in the states.
As for your advice, thanks for your opinion. I came here for a reason, and I won't forget it...
hey ~Sara~ go to mines its much better! www.fortressofthemuslim1.blogspot.com
